The always-amazing Melissa Cha, shot and edited this footage of our recent Hounds of Love show with Not Not Fun. The whole week of SXSW was a total blast and it all seemed to culminate on the 19th into what has to be one of the best nights of my life. If you've watched the video, you'll understand that we have some seriously cool neighbors. If you watch closely, you can see my painting HeavenSent behind the bands adding some color to the proceedings.

As promised, here is my latest painting, the relative behemoth of my latest body of work at 62" by 70". With this piece, I feel like I've reached a milestone. The vision I've been working for these past few months is coalescing more solidly than ever and I feel very confidant as I move on to my next work. I'm now working on two, much much smaller paintings. At 8x10", how much will they share with this work, and how much will the change in scale affect my approach as a painter? Obviously the impact of scale on the viewer is sort of a moot point on the internet, unfortunately.

Just finished this drawing of my roommate, bandmate and all-around mate, Colin Foster striking a very characteristic rock-star pose. I realized as I was making it, that viewers might mistake the image for someone in a Guy Fawkes mask rocking out. In fact, Colin just looks a lot like Guy Fawkes, if those masks are to be taken as an accurate likeness. Thus this work helped me understand something new about my subject and it gives me something to call him besides "Captain Morgan".

Finished a new piece for a client who just wanted something "colorful and contemporary". As an illustrator, I rarely receive a job with that much freedom and it was fun to let myself go totally wild on this one. The painting is mostly acrylic on a 30x40" canvas (which touched both sides of my tiny workspace). It doesn't come across in photos, unfortunately, but there are a few instances of silver metallic spatters throughout that add an exciting textural juxtaposition to the work. Overall, I'm quite happy and have already started a new piece that takes some of the explorations here even further. Nows your chance to call dibs.

Opening Shots

I pity the poor soul who didn't make it to the opening of Deathrace 1776. A great time was had by all- especially me. I officially unveiled the new oil paintings I've been working on for the past 8 weeks or so. I'm very excited about them and foresee many more to come, but I'll discuss all that in more detail in a later post. For now, check out these snapshots of the opening!

Work Selected for Society of Illustrators West 48!

Exciting news. Some time forever ago, I entered work in the annual SILA competition and eventually forgot all about it. Cue a pleasant surprise yesterday when a message in my inbox informs me that my print Edward Gorey Eating a Sandwich has been selected! It wasn't my favorite of the series, but it was the most radically improved; I actually just reworked it on top of the original transparency. Guess the lesson here is don't give up on your ugly babies, because with just a little spitshine you can turn that ugly duckling into a prize-winning hog- as the saying goes.
